Turks & Caicos

Just eight of the Turks & Caicos' forty islands are inhabited and the fantastic beaches, coastline and surrounding make these a tropical dream destination. The different islands offer visitors different experiences, all of which make for a fabulous holiday. Grand Turk houses the capital - Cockburn Town, Grand (or Middle) Caicos is the largest island, Providenciales (Provo) has the most developed tourist facilities and West Caicos offers fantastic seascapes for divers. The average year round temperature for the islands is 83F/28C.

The archipelago is a British Depedent Territory and English is the official language. Many believe that the islands were the first place for Christopher Columbus to land in the New World, rather than San Salvador. Arawak Indians and pirates have also been inhabitants, but now the islands' economy is centered on tourism.

Keen fishermen and scuba divers visit Grand Turk, which also offers other attractions including the National Museum, Lighthouse and Waterloo Governor's House here. Wall-diving is very popular off the coast of Grand Turk, where the sea plunges 7,000 feet in the Columbus Passage.

Grand (or Middle) Caicos provides visitors with archaeological interest from the Arawak and Lacayan Indian settlements, along with the Mudjeon Harbour and Conch Bar Caves.

Provo has been developed to provide visitors with good facilities, to compliment the natural beauty of Grace Bay Beach - twice voted best beach in the world by Conde Nast Traveller's readers. Good hotels, restaurants, shopping and a casino offer tourists with alternative entertainment, as does the Provo Golf Course. Visitors can also enjoy the Caicos Conch Farm, rock carvings and Jojo the dolphin. Conch meat is a Caribbean delicacy and can be sampled on the island.

The islands of Salt Cay, North Caicos and South Caicos provide visitors with further attractions, including the flamingo pond on North Caicos and an 18th Century commissioner's house on South Caicos. Horse-riding, wind-surfing and deep-sea fishing are alternative activities to be sampled on some of the different islands.

Each island hosts various festivals throughout the year to ensure that visitors are kept highly entertained and can sample the Caribbean fun loving lifestyle. They include the Regatta Festival (South Caicos, May); Fun in the Sun Festival (Salt Cay, June) Provo Summer Festival (Providenciales, July) and Game Fishing Tournament, (Grand Turk, July/August).
