Suriname

Suriname is located on the N.E.Coast of South America, bordering Guyana, French Guyana and Brazil. Visitors arrive at the capital of Paramaribo by plane, situated by the coast of the North of the country. The coastal plains are met by savannahs, which reach the highland region - featuring dense tropical rainforest and rivers.

Dutch is the official language of the country, after the Netherlands acquired the country from the English, which acquire it from France. Many people also speak English and multiculturalism is evident in the country's capital city, cuisine and communities. Suriname currently has a small population of around 500,000 people, half of who live in Paramaribo.

Suriname is also blessed with fantastic wildlife, including the giant sea turtle, and boat trips are available to watch them off the coast. Wildlife inland includes the howler monkey, jaguars, alligators and 700 species of birds. There are 13 nature reserves within the country and rainforest parks. The central Suriname Nature Reserve is a World Heritage site. Adventurous travellers can take a jeep safari, go kayaking, rafting, hiking, jungle trekking and camping to explore these areas. Tourists can also take part in a couple of activities to try to make their fortune - either by gold digging and sifting or by visiting one of the seven casinos.
