St Vincent and The Grenadines

St Vincent houses the islands' capital Kingstown and is the largest island in the group. The island is mountainous and La Soufriere is the local volcano, creating black sand beaches and lush vegetation throughout St Vincent. The Grenadines comprise 32 islands and cays creating the 'tail' south of St Vincent and North of Grenada.

Don't miss the splendid Botanic Gardens, near Kingston, which founded in 1763 are the oldest in the Western Hemisphere. Further highlights surrounding the capital include Fort Charlotte with superb views, and city arches in the centre and the eclectic markets. Many visitors take a day trip to visit La Soufriere volcano. Layou, also situated on St Vincent, retains evidence of the Carib Indian's, the islands' original inhabitants with rock carvings. Trinity Falls, The Falls of Baleine and Buccament Valley are also interesting sightseeing destinations.

The Grenadines are renowned as a location for those seeking rest, relaxation and romance and at the same time offer some spectacular tropical scenery. Some of the islands within The Grenadines renowned for their white beaches, clear water and scenery include Tobago Cays, Union Island, Palm Island, Petit St Vincent and Mustique.

With wonderful clear waters, snorkelling is popular, and swimmers can relax in the water without disturbance from jetskis, which are forbidden on St Vincent and The Grenadines. Other activities include tennis, hiking, horseriding (in Mustique), deep-sea fishing, scuba diving and sailing, while the country's golf course is Carenage Golf Course located on the island of Canouan.

It is possible to sail between the islands in a short period of time, and many visitors explore as much of The Grenadines as possible, occasionally linking their trip with a stay in Barbados. Look out for the giant turtles in the water during your trip around The Grenadines. Annual festivals include the SVG Blues Festival on St Vincent, Bequia and Mustique (February), the Canouan Regatta (May) and the National Dance Festival (November).  Accommodation and restaurants retain a rustic charm and combine sophisication with a friendly attitude.
