Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is part of the USA Commonwealth and retains aspects of its Spanish history, with both Spanish and English spoken around the island. The mainland host the capital, San Juan and the country also incorporates the smaller islands of Vieques, Culebra and Mona.

Puerto Rico is also known as one of the most child friendly destinations in the Caribbean and the island provides families with much to explore and plenty to see and do. At the same time, the nightlife is amongst the liveliest in the Americas and accommodation is numerous to meet many different requirements.

The country's Latin American heritage is revealed in the music, food, drink, dress and entertainment. Join in the fun in one of the country's annual events, including the San Sebastian Street Festival (January), Heineken Jazz Fest (June) World Salsa Congress (July) and Bacardi Artisans Fair (December).

In its 3,350 square miles, Puerto Rico has a wealth of places to visit, including the Old San Juan Historical City and Fortress, a World Heritage site. Ponce is the second largest city and boasts Spanish, art deco and Creole art and architecture along with its annual Carnival in February.

The mainland also has 272 miles of coastline, fit for plenty of watersports, swimming, snorkelling and sun-bathing.

Inland, keen botanists, eco-tourists and explorers can visit rainforests, mountains and the National Parks, home of over 2240 species of wildlife and flora. For hikers of varying experience, the Rio Abajo Forest Reserve on the Western half of the island offers 70 walking trails.

Exploring the smaller islands can be equally as rewarding, offering peace and tranquillity in a beautiful setting. Don't miss the phosphorescent bays on Vieques, the superb beaches at Culebra or the uninhabited nature reserve of Mona, with a perfect coral surrounding.

Travel from the UK and Europe involves a stop in one of America's international airports, such as Miami, Philadelphia and Chicago.
