Haiti
Haiti part-occupies the island of Hispaniola, along with the larger Dominican Republic (See separate web page) and is approx. 50 miles East of Cuba.
Lowland lakes and rivers, along with black sand stretches and white and beaches compliment mountainous terrain inland. For beach lovers, Haiti has a range of accessible beaches, served by hotels, cafes and waterport operators. Further afield, secluded coves can be reached only by rowing boat and are fantastic for swimming and snorkelling. The island is steadily updating its existing amenities and new developments are planned for coastal areas.

Diverse bird and wild life attract adventurous travellers to the island, along with the mysterious myths surrounding one of the island's religions, Voodoo. Travelling around the island, it is possible to spot flamingos, crocodiles, parakeets and even water buffalo in the paddy fields. Both Ruines du Palais Sans Souci and Ramiers national park are World Heritage sites. |
One of the unforgettable sights is The Citadelle LaFerriere, possibly the largest fortress in the Western hemisphere, situated on top of the 3,000ft mountain near the town of Milot. Visitors can journey to the fortress by car (within half a mile of the site) or on horseback and marvel at the scale of the building, which took 200,000 people to build between 1804 and 1817.
Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital city, offers history and culture in its museums, galleries, monuments and eclectic markets along with hotels and restaurants. Finally, don't miss sampling the famous Barbancourt rum, brewed at Haiti's local distillery.
