Guadeloupe
Guadeloupe is an archipelago, comprising the butterfly-shaped main island (with the administrative capital, Basse-Terre), the smaller islands of Marie Galante, La Desirade and Les Saintes along with St. Martin and St. Barts (see separate web pages).
Lively festivals bring out the Caribbean spirit of the island, including Carnival celebrations (February) 'Festival of Big Drums' (July) and the Creole Music Festival (November). Sample the Creole and French cuisines for a true taste of Guadaloupe.

Sights to explore include the 74,000 acre Parc Naturel, volcanic mountain ranges, rainforests, hot water springs and waterfalls of the Basse-Terre section of the main island and the sugar plantations and sandy shorelines of Grande-Terre. Secluded coves attract sunbathers, divers and snorkellers alike.
Hike and swim in the spectacular environment of Basse-Terre and spot some of the earliest evidence of man on the island, the rock carvings of the Arawaks.
Grand-Terre provides visitors with plenty of cafes, beaches and accommodation, along with invigorating watersports such as water-skiing and windsurfing. Nudist beaches are also available, particularly on Ilet de Gosier. Further activities include yachting, horseback riding and golf and cultural enthusiasts can wander around the Musee Saint-John Perse, dedicated to the 1960 Nobel Prize winning poet born in Guadeloupe.
