Dominica

(Not to be confused with the Dominican Republic)

Part of the Windward Islands, Dominica is situated between Gaudaloupe and Martinique. Known as 'the Nature Island of the Caribbean' there is much natural beauty to explore in this 290-square mile island.

Dominica boasts volcanic, mountainous, lush green landscapes, and over 365 rivers and streams, along with black and white sand beaches. Specific highlights include the Boiling Lake, Trafalgar Falls, Indian Rivers, Titou Gorge and the World Heritage site Morne Trois Pitons National Park (17,000 acres). Wildlife enthusiasts can spot over 160 species of bird, including the Sisserou parrots and other exotic animals that have been wiped out on neighbouring islands.

Why not take part in a once in a lifetime trip whale watching? Humpback, Pilot and Sperm whales and their calves can be sighted in the calm offshore waters in the winter breeding season - November to March. Other activities include diving, snorkelling, mountain biking, abseiling, canoeing and hiking. Divers are rewarded with spectacular underwater scenery including valleys, sheer walls and hot springs on the seabed

The Carib Reserve National Park is home to the last remaining Carib-Indian population in the Caribbean islands. The people are descendants of the Caribs, the pre-Columbian people who gave the Caribbean its name. Visitors can enter the territory and observe some of their remaining traditions.

Nightlife on the island is usually calm, except during the annual World Creole Music Festival hosted by the island's the capital Roseau in October attracting participants from all over the globe.

Eco-tourists, naturalists, botanists and those seeking a sense of adventure are attracted to Dominica to observe, and preserve, the island's unique natural wonders.
