Cruising is currently the fastest growing sector of the travel market. A cruise offers a luxurious holiday in adventurous places; a continuous tour without ever having the inconvenience of having to unpack.  The secret of its success lies in its amazing diversity.  Cruising really does offer something for every taste and budget. And, of course, it is ideal for people who don't like flying, and a perfect way to avoid airport delays (as long as you take a cruise from a UK port).

Sailing vessels, packet boats and adventure ships are a dream come true for would-be sea salts keen to explore the world's wilder reaches, while small, elegant luxury ships cater for those who go for exclusivity and discreet glamour.  Then there are big, sassy "rock around the clock" ships, great for honeymooners, young families, and party animals of all ages.  Often cruise ships travel to areas of the world that are otherwise difficult to get to, such as fjords.

The main reason for the growth in cruising is the huge investment in new ships.  There are currently over 45 ships on order at a total cost of several billion pounds. Within the UK there has been an emergence of "tour operator" cruises, and a big expansion by the market leader, P & O.  Cruise lines are adding new ships to their fleets all the time, with Cunard's Queen Mary 2 having topped the bill for 2004.

There are many different types and destinations of cruises.

The Royal Clipper set sail on her maiden voyage up the Thames on 18th July 2000.  She is the world's largest sailing ship with 5 masts and carrying 42 sails.  Beautifully fitted out, with three swimming pools, spa and a unique underwater viewing floor, this elegant clipper is the ultimate in luxurious and modern cruising whilst still representing a bygone maritime age.  Passengers can assist the crew in sailing the ship.

This boom in capacity has brought good times for consumers, meaning cruises are now available at competitive value-for-money prices.  Although at first sight they may seem expensive compared to a land-based holiday, they are not when you take into account all the "extras" that are included.  These include all your meals - and if you wanted to you could eat from daybreak to midnight! - and free entertainment such as shows, nightclubs, dances, plays, seminars, keep-fit classes, virtual reality ski-machines, deck tennis and much more.  On some ships even shore excursions are included.  At the top end of the market, Silversea even includes Moet & Chandon champagne, wines and spirits.
